[ARCHIVED] Possible Winter Storm

An excellent checklist for planning is available on the Red Cross site; http://www.redcross.org/images/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m4240231_WinterStorms.pdf
It is important to have a plan and be prepared to be self-sufficient for 72 hours as it would take some time for emergency shelters to open, transportation to be established or supplies to be brought into the Town from the State after a disastrous storm. Experience has shown that unless there is a loss of power, people do not desire or require assistance. As such it is a general rule that emergency shelters are not opened for a winter storm until there is a demonstrated need post storm.
If you have needs that are depended on electrical power, you need to incorporate that into your plan. i.e. If you use an Oxygen concentrator, plan on having sufficient stored Oxygen on hand to last until shelters can be opened.
Ledyard’s sheltering plan utilizes the Red Cross in conjunction with the surrounding towns. Shelters are opened based on geographic need and available facilities. The Groton Senior Center, Fitch and Stonington High Schools are predesignated locations. Ledyard High School, Emergency Services Building or the Gales Ferry Fire House may also be used under certain circumstances. Announcements will be made when a shelter is opened and its location.
The primary means of communicating emergency protection actions or information to residents of Ledyard will be through the utilization of the Everbridge Reverse 9-1-1 system. Social media such as the Town website and Facebook will be utilized to keep residents informed of non-emergency actions and procedures. Local Radio station, WCTY 97.7 FM, Norwich is authorized to stay on the air during national emergencies. Shelter information can also be obtained by calling 211.
In a wide spread situation where electronics would fail, a daily posting will be made at the Town Hall, Emergency Services Building, Gales Ferry Fire Company and at the Ledyard Police Department of conditions and services available.
Additional information is on the Town Website under Emergency Management.
