Vehicle Strikes Utility Pole
On January 15, 2012 at approximately 11:46 p.m. the Ledyard Police Department was notified that a one vehicle accident versus telephone pole had occurred on Route 214 (Iron Street) in the area of Spicer Hill Road. The Ledyard Police Department, Ledyard Fire Department, and Ledyard Volunteer Emergency Squad responded. Emergency personnel found that a single vehicle had left the roadway striking a AT&T pole causing heavy damage to the pole and no injury to the vehicle operator, Christine Haas DOB 04/14/1978 of Gales Ferry. The accident remains under investigation by the Ledyard Police Department.
As a result of the downed utility pole, Route 214 is estimated to be closed until early afternoon on January 16, 2012.
Head-On Motor Vehicle Accident With Fire
On January 18, 2012 at approximately 5:02 p.m. a motor vehicle accident occurred on Route 12 in the Gales Ferry section of Ledyard in which 2 vehicles struck head on, with one catching fire. Responding Officers found all occupants out of the vehicles and the Gales Ferry Fire Department quickly extinguished the fire. Due to injuries from the accident one operator was transported by the Ledyard Volunteer Emergency Squad to the WW Backus Hospital in Norwich.
Initial investigation by the Ledyard Police Department indicates that a Northbound vehicle operated by Richard Carlson DOB 04/05/1952 of Long Cove Road Gales Ferry collided with a Southbound vehicle operated by Susan Penrose DOB 05/29/1958 of Meadow Drive Gales Ferry. The cause of the accident remains under investigation. As a result of fire suppression efforts water froze on the roadway requiring it to be closed for a short period until the roadway could be sanded by State Department of Transportation.
Motor Vehicle Theft Arrest
On January 23, 2012 at approximately 7:18 a.m. a Ledyard Police Officer on Patrol observed a vehicle parked at the Saw Mill Park which had not been there a few minutes earlier. Due to a rash of motor vehicle thefts in the area over the past several weeks, the vehicle owner was contacted and it was discovered that the vehicle was supposed to be at their residence and had been stolen.
Investigation by the Ledyard Police Department involved a canvass of area homes through which a physical description was obtained of the individual observed parking the vehicle and walking away. A track was conducted utilizing a Ledyard Police K9 which led to a nearby residence. As a result, Samuel H. Green DOB 08-10-1976 of 7 Lee Brook Drive Ledyard was arrested and charged with Larceny in the 3rd Degree. He was released on a $2,500 bond with a court date of 02/07/12 at GA 10 New London.

Projectiles Through Windows
The Ledyard Police Department is asking for the publics help in investigating a string of incidents in which small metal balls have been launched through the windows of homes in the Highlands section of town between January 19, 2012 and January 27, 2012 In at least one of the incidents, a homeowner was almost struck.
