Burglary Arrest
On May 9, 2009, at approximately 9 p.m., the Ledyard Police Department responded to a residential address on Shewville Road for the report of a burglary having taken place. On arrival, officers found that the residence had been entered by force and that valuables had been stolen. Investigation by the patrol and detective divisions determined that the perpetrator of this crime is known by the victim and that individual was subsequently arrested. Jason Carver (date of birth February 19, 1985) was arrested and charged with burglary 3rd and larceny 5th degree. He was held on a $50,000 bond and will be presented at GA 10 New London. This investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are possible.

Motor Vehicle Roll Over
On May 11, 2009, at 5:45 p.m., the Ledyard Police Department received the report of a motor vehicle which had rolled over on Colonel Ledyard Highway near Luciane Way. On arrival the vehicle was found in the woods adjacent to the roadway. The Ledyard Center Fire Company, Gales Ferry Fire Department, and Mystic River Ambulance responded and assisted with removing the operator from the vehicle. The vehicle operator, Bryan Fillian of 22 Shelby Court in Mystic was transported by Mystic River Ambulance to the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital for minor injury. As a result of this investigation Fillion was issue an infraction for Failure to Drive Right.

Drunk Driving arrest
On May 12, 2009, at approximately 0630 hours, the Ledyard Police Department responded to the report of a motor vehicle on the guard rail on Route 12 near Christy Hill Road in the Gales Ferry section of Ledyard. On arrival, officers found a lone male attempting to remove the vehicle from atop the guard rail utilizing a hand jack. Based upon investigation the operator, Paul Barnes (date of birth June 19, 1957) of 44 Hillcrest Road South Lyme, Connecticut, was found to be operating under the influence of alchohol or drugs and placed under arrest. He was released with a court date of May 26, 2009, at GA 10 New London.

Evading Accident
On May 12, 2009, at approximately 0050 hours, the Ledyard Police Department responded to the report of a 1 car motor vehicle accident versus stone wall on Route 214 at Whalehead Road. On arrival, officers found a vehicle with 2 uninjured passengers but no operator. The passengers stated that the operator had fled the scene because there was a warrant for his arrest. This investigation will continue and an arrest warrant for this accident will be applied for. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Eric Bushor at 860-464-6400.

Burglary Investigation
The Patrol and Detective Divisions of the Ledyard Police Department is investigating a residential burglary which occured at a home in the Lantern Hill/Long Pond area. This burglary occured on or about May 6, 2009, during which construction and computer equipment were among the items taken. Witnesses have reported seeing a sliver or grey vehicle with 2 white males at the home at the time of this crime. Vehicle versus Motorcycle Accident
On May 15, 2009, at approximately 0709 hours, the Ledyard Police Department received the report of a vehicle versus motorcycle accident on Avery Hill Road near Marlene Drive. Joshua D. Leaf of Sunset Avenue in Ledyard was traveling on Avery Hill Road when it collided with an SUV driven by 36-year-old Steven M. Hagley of 17 Marlene Drive. Leaf was transported by the Ledyard Volunteer Emergency Squad to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London with minor injury. As a result of investigation, Hagley was issued an infraction for failing to obey at a stop sign.

Car versus Utility Pole Accident
On May 18, 2009, at approximately 3:10 p.m., the Ledyard Police Department received the report of a vehicle having struck a utility pole on Route 214 near the Ledyard Middle School, causing the pole and wires to come down into the roadway. The vehicle, a 2009 Mazda 3 operated by Caylin S. Banning (date of birth March 19, 1991) was uninjured in this crash. The roadway will remained closed between Route 12 and Avery Hill Road for an extended period while the pole and wires are repaired. The cause of this accident remains under investigation. The Ledyard Fire Company, Gales Ferry Fire Department, and the Ledyard Volunteer Emergency Squad also responded this this accident.

Sobriety Check Point
On May 22 and May 23, the Ledyard Police Department, along with the Resident State Trooper and officers from the Regional Traffic Unit, will be holding a sobriety check point in the Town of Ledyard. The checkpoint will focus on identfying operators under the influence and other violations.

Sobriety Check Point Results

On the evening of May 22, 2009, Ledyard Police and the Ledyard Resident State Trooper hosted a Southeastern Regional Traffic Unit Sobriety Checkpoint on Route 12 in Gales Ferry. Ledyard Police and officers from Groton Town, Groton Long Point, Stonington, and East Lyme Police Departments participated in the sobriety checkpoint.

The following arrests resulted:
  • Nicholas J. Sabo, age 21, of 355 Randall Road in Lebanon was charged with possession of marijuana less than 4 ounces and possession of drug paraphernalia.
  • Louis T. Darden, age 25, of 41 Garfield Avenue Apartment 2 in New London was charged with operating under suspension.
  • Huber J. Tirado, age 32, of 41 Crown Knoll Court, Apartment 55 in Groton was charged with operating under suspension,
  • Kevin Johnson, Age 49, of 110 Richard Brown Road in Uncasville was charged with operating under suspension, misuse of registration, and operating an unregistered vehicle.
