Fire Marshal

Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Fire Marshal's Office to prevent and/or reduce the incidence of fire by increasing the awareness and knowledge of the residents and businesses respecting fire safety, and by ensuring compliance with the Connecticut Fire Safety Code and applicable regulations of the State of Connecticut. This mission will be accomplished through fire prevention education, fire investigations and compliance inspections. We will actively participate with our community, and strive to effectively and efficiently utilize all resources made available, to provide safety and excellent customer service to the citizens of the town of Ledyard, Connecticut.
The Ledyard Fire Marshal's office is located in the Emergency Services Building at 11 Fairway Drive in Ledyard.

Staff includes a full time Fire Marshal and 2 part time Deputy Fire Marshals. The Fire Marshal's Office represents both the Gales Ferry and Ledyard Fire Districts in the Town of Ledyard.

Fire Marshal's Office
The Ledyard Fire Marshal's Office works with and through the Connecticut State Fire Marshal's Office, which is a division of the Connecticut Department of Public Safety. The Ledyard Fire Marshal's Office enforces Connecticut State Law, Chapter 541, Sections 29-291 through 29-370, which includes the Connecticut Fire Safety Code, referenced national codes, and local ordinances. Both the Fire Marshal and the Deputy Fire Marshals are state certified and must maintain a minimum of 90 additional continuing education credits every 3 years to maintain certification.

Occupancy Inspections & Responsibilities
All occupancies in the Town of Ledyard (except for 1 and 2-family homes) fall under the jurisdiction of the Fire Marshal and require plan review, construction inspection and annual inspections thereafter. Occupancies are required by law to be upgraded to the latest codes in effect at the time of their construction or annual inspection.

Inspection Duties
Duties, as prescribed by state law in addition to plan review and inspections, include:
  • All liquor permit premises
  • Certification of hazardous materials transport vehicles
  • Convalescent centers
  • Day care centers
  • Fire investigation (for cause and origin)
  • Flammable liquid tanks
  • Nursery schools
  • Permits for blasting
The Fire Marshal also conducts local fire prevention education programs and is the open burning official for the Town of Ledyard, issuing all opening burning permits.
